History...

The Hospital's founder George Simpson died in January
1779 and was buried in the cemetery of St Mary's Church,
Mary Street Dublin. Little is known of him except that
he was a wealthy Merchant and Landowner. It is said
that in his later years he suffered from weak eyesight
and gout and during his final illness he had thought
of others suffering as he was, but without the means
to obtain relief.
George
Simpson left the residue of his estate, after providing
for his wife, relatives and a number of charities, to
the funding of a Hospital for "poor, decayed and
gouty men". The Hospital was originally located
in Parnell Street. This building was something of a
Dublin landmark and is of course mentioned in Ulysses.
In 1925 these premises were sold to Williams and Woods
and the charity moved to its present location at Wyckham
on the Ballinteer Road Dundrum. Wyckham is a late Georgian
house built around 1800 which has been extended and
modernised by the Charity.
